You’ve heard that eating too many sweets or drinking beverages with high sugar content will cause cavities. The science behind this is that sugar, and in fact all starches, temporarily softens tooth enamel so that bacteria can infiltrate your tooth and cause decay. Does this mean you need to stop eating all sweets? No. Eating sugary and starchy foods in moderation combined with practicing excellent daily oral hygiene, using fluoridated toothpaste and mouthwash, will deter cavities. Also, attending six-month check-ups and cleanings are important because cavities often do not have any symptoms until they are very large.
When a tooth has decay, we will remove the infection and then seal the tooth with a filling. Fillings take only one dental visit to place. With the recent advancements in dental filling materials, non-metal fillings (composite resins) now offer many advantages over the metal amalgam fillings:
- Composite resin fillings are dyed to match the color of your tooth, so they look completely natural.
- Composite resin fillings preserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible.
- With proper dental care, composite resin fillings can last for many years.
